QuoteA former high-level Department of Energy official in the Clinton Administration told the Journal the US government’s push to return people to Rongelap Island in 2011 is “unjustified and unfairly places the burden of protection on the Rongelap people.”

Robert Alvarez (pictured), a Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and Environmental Policy and a Senior Policy Advisor to the US Secretary of Energy Hazel O’Leary from 1993 to 1999 said last week that without the broad and repeated application of potassium fertilizer on islands that Rongelap people will live on and use, individual doses will exceed the agreed-to 100 millirem limit per year. “It is not clear if the radiological terms and conditions of the 1992 agreement are being met,” Alvarez said in response to questions from the Journal.

  • . . .and the result? From what I can see, the results so far are:

[*] A US Dept of State posting of testimony laying out all the great contributions the US has and continues to make to the development of the RMI. We have seen this list many times before. http://www.stat…/05/142070.htm

[*] One (one) on line news article, published by Newsday (a newspaper based on Long Island, a suburb of NYC), that you have to pay if you want to read. http://www.news…lout-1.1925479

List of Marshallese attendees, as best I can determine from postings:

    [*] President Zedkaia
    [*] Minister Silk
    [*] Minister Matthew
    [*] Minister Kedi
    [*] Minister Ading
    [*] Senator DeBrum
    [*] Senator (Michael) Kabua
    [*] Senator Juda
    [*] Senator Loeak
    [*] Senator Riklon
    [*] Mayor Kelen
    [*] Mr. Bondrik
    [*] Mr. Dribo
    [*] Mr. Nakamura
    [*] Plus some wives?
    [*] Plus some special assistants?
[*] Plus the President's Press Secretary and personal security detail?
[*] And who paid for Dr. Palafox to attend and testify?

In two years of so, when Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaegam calls his next hearing, suggest another change that might be needed is for the RMI to review if it can continue to afford to send such large delegations to attend hearings in Washington that resulted in. . .what?

“I hope the signing of the LUA (Land Use Agreement) allows the Government of the Marshall Islands more time to focus on the biggest issues it faces – how to raise the level of education and health of the Marshallese people and how to create an economy that will be stable after direct US funding ends in 2023.”
US Ambassador to the Marshall Islands Martha Campbell, as quoted by MI Journal, 13 May 2011, pg 4
  • Did all these guys participated or just there to seat and listened? That's a lot of $$$$ spent for tickets and accomodation. What a waste.

  • I know with absolutely certainty that the Kwajalein Delegation (Rod Nakamura, Chris and others from Kwajalein) were paid for by funds made available for by the Iroj-landowners. So that is not a government expense. The expense for the delegation is worth every penny. Prior to Thursday (a wedding and birthday) it was announced people should anticipate change. Frequent clanking of glasses were all around Kwajalein Atoll and order for the precious unused fountain pen that has collected dust since the signing Compact II to be taken out and prepped was issued. The Impossible made possible? Stay tuned.

  • I say the only change will be RMI govt seizing control of Kwaj through eminent domain stop these few "high rollers" from deciding the fate of the RMI. We all know the US is not going to budge on their position, as they should because a deal was made with a legit RMI administration. I doubt they are going bow to the demand of some greedy people. A large delegation is still a waste of money given that most of these people are unlikely to make difference.

The Bikinians have been making trips to Washington since 1972, the result has been several hundred million dollars. Before the trips to Washington they were starving because America didn't care. Yes, I am sure US government officials wish the Bikinians and the other 4 atoll groups would go away, but that won't happen as long as there is radiation present on those atolls.

In Washington we don't just sit around and twiddle our thumbs, we have meetings with our money advisers, our lawyer, Interior reps, money managers, and other professional Americans who get paid money from our trust funds. What, now you are saying we should stay in the RMI and shut up and be happy with what we have?

We sent a delegation of 5 people this week because there was a US Senate hearing and a House hearing concerning nuclear issues. Mike, I know you may see this trip as a waste of money, but, um, aren't you an American? You know, the country that wastes billions upon billions every year on all kinds of goofy things like bridges to nowhere? No problem with money in America, you can just keep printing it...

The only avenue the 4 atoll people of the Marshall Islands have at this point for further compensation and better medical programs is the US Congress. When they call for hearings, you go, no questions asked. Imagine a hearing for the 4 atolls with no one there? What kind of message does that send to all the Congressional people who help bring about these Bills?

  • I don't care how many people travel on this or any other trip. If Jack and others say that the RMI needed 14 official delegates, plus whoever else (wives, special assistants, press attache', etc) accompanied, then fine. Someone is paying for and if it is money well spent that results in more millions for Marshallese, then great.

My view, Marshallese need to be looking at all current practices, including official travel paid for with RMI government funds, to see if these current practices can be sustained after 2023. Change is easier if done gradually, over time.

If it takes a delegation this large to demonstrate to Congress that you care about the hearing, then I stand corrected.

  • IN OTHER WORDS, THE SIZE OF ANY DELEGATION ON ANY ISSUE MEANS NOTHING TO THE US RIGHT PETTITTM? AS I OFTEN SAID, MR. PETTITTM SEEM TO THINK THAT MARSHALLESE SHOULD JUST FORGET WHAT HAPPENED 50 YEARS AGO, AND JUST MOVE ON WITH LIFE. MARSHALLESE WILL NOT SHUT THEIR MOUTH SO LONG AS THE POISON IS OUT THERE. MOUTHS SHOULD BE OPENED WIDE FOR AS LONG AS THE POISON IS THERE, AND MR. PETTITTM YOU CAN SAY ALL YOU WANT BUT YOU CAN NOT SHOUT OUR MOUTH. IT IS YOU WHO SHOULD SHUT HIS MOUTH ON WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO REGARDING THE EVIL ACT IMPOSED ON INNOCENT PEOPLE.
  • I surrender. Next hearing, I think double the number, say 30 or more, Marshallese should attend. Send even more people, if makes everyone feel better or if believe proves some kind of important point to the US about Marshallese resolve.
