    Tony: 'We have the numbers' - Marshall Islands Journal
    The opposition has the numbers to topple President Jurelang Zedkaia and elect a new President at next Tuesday’s Nitijela opening, Kwajalein Senator Tony deBrum told Radio Australia late last week.
    “We have a solid majority going forward of 20-to-22 members,” deBrum told Pacific Beat host Campbell Cooney.
    But deBrum said the opposition group has not yet selected who will be its candidate for President. He confirmed that he is in the running for President.
    Asked if he is seeking the presidency, deBrum said he is one of the contenders, adding he is prepared for the position “if my colleagues so decide.”
    A meeting of senators-elect aligned with opposition to President Zedkaia’s government is scheduled for Thursday this week to decide who will be their presidential candidate among several candidates.

    This morning, the new top 3 are in:

    President: Christopher Loeak, 21-11 over Jurelang Zedkaia. (1 vote for Kessai Note was "spoiled" since Kessai wasn't officially nominated).

    Speaker: Donald Capelle, 20-13 over Brenson Wase

    Vice-Speaker: Tomaki Juda, 20-13 over John Silk.

    It looks like KEA is done for now, and the Kessai 5 cut a deal with Imata and AKA. These are pretty impressive wins, much more convincing than 17-16 or 18-15 like the last two times (for Jurelang and Litokwa).

    Now let's see who gets nominated to the Cabinet.

    There are no term limits in the RMI, for any elected office. That was by design -- the first president set up a system that continues to benefit those already in positions of power. Short of a popular uprising and revolution, it's going to take a Constitutional Convention to change that. Hopefully the new Speaker will push for a ConCon this time around. Otherwise, the presidency and senate seats will continue to be jobs for life for many of our leaders.
