RMI President Christopher J. Loeak left Majuro today for his first state visit to Republic of China (Taiwan) since he assumed the Marshall Islands’ Presidency in January of last year. The President, First Lady Lieom Anono Loeak, and delegation are visiting Taiwan March 26-30 at invitation of ROC President Ma Ying-jeou. They are accompanied by ROC (Taiwan) Ambassador to the RMI, Ambassador George T.K. Li.
The RMI delegation includes Foreign Minister Phillip Muller and Mrs. Muller; Iroij Rakinmeto Solomon; Namu Senator Tony Aiseia; Chief of Staff Chris de Brum; Foreign Affairs Protocol Consultant Neijon Edwards; Public Relations Officer Denise de Brum; and Marshall Islands Development Banks’ Randy Ebot.
The ROC Embassy announced that President Loeak will receive a 21 gun salute on his arrival to meet with President Ma to discuss bilateral cooperation.
President Loeak and delegation will attend the state banquet hosted by President Ma, functions hosted by ROC (Taiwan) Foreign Minister David Y.L. Lin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Ting Joseph Shih, and Chairman of Koo’s Fishing Company Mr. Koo Kwang-Ming, said RMI’s separate announcement yesterday.
President and delegation will also meet with RMI students studying in Taiwan and visit the Taipei World Trade Center.
Mentioned in the ROC Embassy release are visits to Shuang Ho Hospital and Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area as well.
According to the RMI Office of the President, the Government of ROC (Taiwan) has contributed tremendously to the development and growth of the Marshall Islands since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of the Marshall Islands and ROC (Taiwan) on November 20, 1998.“The two countries have collaborated on many initiatives and undertakings on the bilateral level and international fora. The Marshall Islands and ROC (Taiwan) share a close relationship based on common values and goals, and will continue to promote efforts to further strengthen the relations between the two countries.”
