Articles: President Leads Delegation to Five Drought-Stricken Islands
Republic of the Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak spent Saturday and Monday touring 5 drought-affected atolls/islands and reassuring the residents of the government's continued support. Throughout the tour, President Loeak handed over relief supplies including WASH kits, hygienic kits, food, and water.
“We are grateful that our bilateral partners, international organizations, and Marshallese from around the world have assisted with relief efforts towards the drought," President Loeak said.
On June 22, the President visited Mejit Island and Ailuk Atoll accompanied by Senator (Mejit) and Minister of Finance Dennis Momotaro, Ailuk Senator Maynard Alfred, and Paul Grieson, Representative of the International Federation of Red Cross.
The tour, via Air Marshall Islands, continued on Monday with stops in Wotho, Ujae, and Lae. Senator (Wotho) and Minister of Health David Kabua, Ujae Senator Caios Lucky, Lae Mayor Anderson Kattil, Wotho Mayor Tartios Anjolok, Chief of Agriculture Henry Capelle, from the Ministry of R&D, Chief Nurse Bremity Lakjohn from Public Health, and MWSC Operations Manager Halston de Brum also made the trip.
According to the RMI Office of the President, the delegation held town hall meetings to discuss and ascertain first-hand how communities are dealing with the drought, and to provide updates on the efforts taken to assist with the drought.
"President Loeak acknowledged local leadership and the cooperation among communities in dealing with the drought. He assured the communities that his Administration continues to seek and identify sources for the necessary resources needed to address the drought. He also updated communities on the Government’s plans to, amongst others, provide bigger water catchments in the outer islands to mitigate future droughts. President Loeak also discussed food security and the Cabinet’s approval of $2 million to local governments of which sixty percent will assist in efforts in this regard."
