Articles: Hawaii Marshallese Host 4th Annual Education Day
Oahu Marshallese community members are invited to the 2011 Marshallese Education Day in Honolulu on April 16, 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Ala Moana Beach McCoy Pavillion. The fourth annual MED program, "Booj Lolatat non Jelalokjen (Educating Minds for the Future), encourages parents to be more involved in education and challenges students to aim for college.
The event recognizes outstanding students in Marshallese communities who are on the Honor’s Roll in their schools. Educational and community resources, breakout training sessions for parents and students, entertainment, and a free lunch will be offered.
The first Marshallese Education Day was held in 2008 as a way to acknowledge and assist the Marshallese who have moved to the State of Hawaii from the Republic of the Marshall Islands. They face challenges of unfamiliar languages, different value systems, and new school cultures.
