An official ceremony was held on Friday, June 29, 2012, to mark the groundbreaking of the new USP campus in Delap, Majuro, the capital atoll of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The ground breaking was led by President Christopher J. Loeak and USP Chancellor, Sir Frank  Ofagioro Kabui, who is the Governor General of the Solomon Islands.

Also present were, Education Minister Hilda Heine, Finance Minister Dennis Momotaro, USP Vice Chancellor and President Professor Rajesh Chandra, USP Majuro Campus Director Dr. Irene Tafaaki, RMI-USP Joint Education Program Principal Mrs. Tapukitea Rokolekutu, RMI Government officials, and students.

Minister Hilda Heine, who is the Chair of the RMI Campus Advisory Committee and a member of the USP Council, reiterated the Government's commitment towards education and support for USP.

"This is a very symbolic ceremony, confirming a vision that was dreamed of many years ago and we're very happy to confirm that dream and working on making it a reality," said Minister Heine.

The RMI Government has pledged to set aside a US$500,000 to launch a concerted effort to establish the campus.

In his remarks, Professor Chandra stated, "We're very pleased Mr. President that under your presidency and given the commitment to education, that today we take a concrete step towards the dream that is important for the RMI."

He assured President Loeak and the Government that USP would work very closely to an effective implementation plan for the campus.

The ground breaking ceremony was followed by refreshments and a tour of the current campus facilities.
