Marshallese Club Promotes Biking for Health

Bike Club

What would motivate a group of men, age twenty to fifty, to take a 20-plus mile bike ride on a warm Saturday morning? The Marshallese Bike Club in Orange County, California, says it's for health. The members are making changes in their lifestyles and encouraging others to do the same.

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands, is exceeding 25% and growing at a steady rate. Much of the cause of such a high prevalence is due to diet, lack of exercise, and genetic tendencies, stated a 2005 University of Washington study. Many Marshallese living abroad, continue their high fat/sugar diets and sedentary lifestyles.
