"She has so many skills. I think she can get a scholarship at a four-year school," said Estancia Coach Tami Rappa.
Trisha Wase scored a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, to lead visiting Estancia to a 58-55 Golden West League victory over Westminster on Wednesday. The victory keeps the Eagles (10-2, 7-0) in first place.

Trisha Wase, a 5'5" junior at Estancia High in Costa Mesa, led her team, the Eagles, to a 56-34 victory, in its fourth consecutive League win Thursday night. Trisha, who also goes by her Marshallese name Dita, scored a season-high and game-high 21 points to go with eight assists. According to the LA Times Daily Pilot article, "Eagles' Big 3 too big", Wase's superb ball-handling skills broke down Costa Mesa High's defense.

FAYETTEVILLE -- A jury has found that several area doctors were not negligent in their treatment of a 12-year-old Marshall Islands boy who died in 1998. The jury verdict came late Monday after a week of trial and a couple of hours of deliberation.

FAYETTEVILLE -- A lawsuit accusing several area doctors of malpractice in the 1998 death of a 12-year-old Marshall Islands boy began Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court. The estate of Marvin Edwards contends that doctors and nurses misdiagnosed her son as having an ear infection. While tests revealed that Edwards had a brain abscess, there is still disagreement between the parties about whether the boy had meningitis.
A census that will be fully funded by the federal government will try to get a clear picture of the extent of immigration from the freely associated states to Guam. The census will find out such information as: How many immigrants from the freely associated states are on Guam; How many of them are employed and what kind of jobs they hold here; Household income levels; What they buy; where they shop; and What medical services they avail themselves of. It will cost about $50,000 to conduct the census, all of which will be paid for
by the U.S. Census Bureau. About 20 to 30 people who speak the languages used by the
migrants will be hired for the survey interviews.
According to the local National Weather Service office, Guam could be coping with yet another
typhoon by the weekend. Tropical Storm 31W was located near 9.2 degrees north and 162.2 degrees east as of 5 p.m. yesterday, about 1,200 miles east-southeast of Guam, according to Bill Ward, NWS meteorologist. The storm, which had winds of 40 mph at that time, was located very close to Ujelang atoll in the Marshall Islands. The storm is expected to move more in a westward direction in the next 24 hours and increase in intensity, Ward said. Residents of Ujelang last night were expecting northeast winds from 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph, and rainfall of 4 to 8 inches. Hazardous surf with heights of 10 to 15 feet also were expected there, as well as flooding of low-lying areas.

Sievers, who is Director of World Teach, was asked to address the problems of Marshallese young people in the region who "continue to be idle and immobile in the midst of the tremendous opportunitites in this great country."

Marshalls - According to Field Director, Alexis Miesen, the " inaugural WorldTeach Marshall Islands program is off to a roaring start." By July 30, the 26 volunteers had arrived in Majuro to begin a month of language and culture training. After an introduction to RMI government, education policies, and health issues, teachers will be sent out to their schools and islands for a year of service. The WorldTeach program has committed to a three-year stay in the Marshalls. In the August issue of the WorldTeach newsletter, Director Miesen reports that they received a "tremendously warm welcome from the general community" and RMI officials.
RMI athletes brought home 36 medals from the Fifth Micronesian games in Pohnpei, July 21-31, taking fifth place among the 10 countries. Two of the athletes are featured here.

The "vision" for churches in all Marshallese communitie throughout the United States is still the focus of the Marshall Islands' General Council of the Assemblies of God which met for its 16th General Council in three separate meetings.

Carmen Chong Gum is the liason for the Marshallese Community with the Northwest Arkansas Multicultural Center in Springdale. She says that said the language barrier is a major problem.
She said most hospitals and clinics do not have a translator on staff, which makes it difficult for people properly to describe their symptoms.
